Recent events on campus

Hello fellow members,

There is some profoundly sad news about a member of the University of Houston family. A student committed suicide recently. While we do not know the reason for this students’ choice, we know that whatever it may have been, it affected them to the point that they felt they had one option left. Please be aware that there are many mental health services available. If you are having any problems, know that there are people who are willing to listen and to be there for you.

Some who face these issues feel like they are not worth helping, or that their problems are not “bad enough” to trouble someone else with them. If you fall into this category, please know that there are those willing to help you, no matter how large or small it may seem to you. What is important here is how these events or issues are affecting you. You are important. You matter. Please reach out to whoever you can.

Currently, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is allowing walk-in appointments, and is waiving their normal fees. If it is not current business hours, and you are in crisis, please call 713.743.5454. The consultant on duty will help you with whatever is happening.

If you are uncomfortable with talking to a CAPS representative, there are many resources available on this page. You can try to find social services to assist you on that page, and there are crisis hotlines listed as well if you need immediate help.

If you want to help your fellow students, please visit the UH Wellness Programs page, and consider signing up for one of the training programs to help you identify students in need, and provide you tools for providing assistance.

Please, everyone, be safe, and ask if you need help.
